Ladysmith Secondary School and the LDBA
Posted on Wednesday, February 17th, 2010
The Ladysmith Secondary Student Government is a group of students who are developing the school’s unity and individuals’ feeling of value by improving communication between the Student Government and the school groups, teams and individuals. We wish that all students will feel that their voice is heard, that their ideas matter and something will be done about them.
Started towards the end of the 2007/08 school year with former Principal John Blain’s initiative, the Student Government is a group of dedicated students who wish to better their school. Two years prior, Mr. Blain created the HUB, a group with similar goals. Presently in the Student Government, approximately twenty students, with the direct support of four teachers, are responsible for the results they pursue. They used the 2008/09 school year to implement the Student Government and develop a constitution that would determine the workings of Ladysmith Secondary School to ensure the necessary, strong connection between the governance and the school. In short, the model developed features the Student Government as a central council in the school with which subcommittees, school groups and all students communicate ideas, opinions, requests and feedback. With this information, the Student Government’s members discuss possible endeavors and how to best make these happen.
To allow this government to make changes, to provide for the students and to better the school, all funds from the sale of student cards enters the Student Government’s account. To receive the funding, the Student Government promotes the student cards with incentives to purchase them. Among other benefits, LSS student card holders are eligible to play on school teams, they have student identification and they pay a discounted price for many school events such as dances. Local businesses support LSS in another big way. Ladysmith’s businesses displaying the LSS crest offer discounts to those student card holders who have paid their student card fee. This provides the incentive for students to purchase student cards. The money from student card sales goes to the Student Government and essentially back to the students in the form of events, leadership opportunities or any other way the Student Government deems beneficial. Also, the businesses’ support promotes shopping locally by the students and the community.
This year, with new members, the Student Government will once again work to build unity and make each student feel they are an asset to the school. Two of their main goals are: to improve communication and to boost Ladysmith Secondary’s school spirit and pride. Two subcommittees to especially see these happen are the Communications Committee and the spirit building Activities Committee. Governing and guiding a school is never easy, but, with the Student Government’s determined, hard-working students and all the support, LSS has strong potential to be the best it can be
The Student Card and Shop Locally Campaign
This campaign is truly a benefit for all involved; the money received from the student card sales directly benefits the students at LSS, the students save money on their purchases and of course they have a greater incentive to shop locally. With this, the adults of the community will likely appreciate the support for the high school and support your business.
Here are some of the details:
- The discount can be whatever the business chooses (eg. 10-25% off all or certain items or services, “2 for 1”, discounted first purchase, etc.)
- The Student Government will help promote your business (such as announcements, posters, pamphlets and a list of supporting businesses)
- The discount will be in place from the time of sign up until August 31st
- Only students with a 2009-2010 LSS student card with the copy-proofing decal shall receive the discount
Here is how to sign up your business:
- Contact Ladysmith Secondary Student Government at lssgovernment09 [at] sd68 [dot] bc [dot] ca to tell them you would like to support the Student Card and Shop Locally Campaign (or for any opportunities, events or other connections with LSS).
- Wait for a Student Government member to arrive promptly after deciding to support to fill out and sign the official form for our records.
- Put the received Ladysmith Secondary School emblems on your business’s window and counter to show your support and bring in customers!
Thank you very much for your time and support!
